Most of us consider the sun a friend – not an enemy. I mean, look at all the good it does. It’s the body’s primary source of Vitamin D (strong bones, here we come!), it helps stimulate the production of melanin (goodbye pale, hello tan!), and it contributes to our circadian rhythm (a balanced body is a healthy body!).

Those sunny days in Staten Island are more crucial to our health than most of us realize, but is there such a thing as too much sun? It’s not what people want to hear – especially those who enjoy a good tan – but there’s a dark side to sunlight, and it could be the reason why you’re aging faster than the rest of us.

This is a phenomenon called ‘photoaging.’

In order to understand the concept of photoaging, we first need to understand what collagen, elastin, and melanin are – and why they’re important for skin health. Don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you below:

  • Collagen - a group of proteins that make up roughly 30% of all protein in the body. It contributes to the strength and elasticity of the skin.
  • Elastin - a protein that contributes to flexibility, elasticity, and firmness of the skin. When you pinch your skin, elastin helps it return to its original form.
  • Melanin - a natural skin pigment that contributes to the color of your skin, hair, eyes, and more. It helps protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays.

Spending too much time in the sun can destroy the collagen and elastin in the skin – resulting in wrinkles, sagging skin, and fine lines. Not only that, but too much sunlight often results in overactive pigment cells and high levels of melanin clumping together – this is where those age spots and blemishes come from.

There are various things we can do to protect our skin from premature aging – using sunscreen, seeking shade, wearing clothes that block the sun, and maintaining a regular skincare routine – but what can we do when those efforts aren’t enough? Don’t worry – that’s where Candela Nordlys IPL comes into play.

Candela Nordlys IPL: 4 Timeless Technologies, 1 Happy Client

Candela Nordlys IPL is one of our favorite skincare treatments – and it’s about to be yours, too! It’s one of the most versatile, state-of-the-art machines on the market today and is here to solve all your photoaging problems – from age spots to sunspots, freckles, rosacea, port wine stains, and broken blood vessels.

The machine utilizes four timeless technologies – SWT IPL, Frax 1550, Frax 1940, and Nd:YAG 1064 nm – to increase collagen and elastin production, while also destroying those clumps of excess melanin. Let’s take a closer look at the four technologies and how they can be combined to enhance skin appearance.

SWT IPL: A One-of-a-Kind IPL Experience

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photofacial, is a non-surgical procedure that uses light energy to target and melt away unwanted cells. Unlike a laser, which generates a single beam of light, IPL therapy generates multiple wavelengths to treat a variety of skin issues and conditions at the same time.

IPL can be used to treat both pigmented and vascular lesions – such as:

  • Pigmented Lesions - light energy is used to heat and destroy pigment cells, which helps treat freckles, lentigines, skin tags, age spots, blemishes, melasma, and more.
  • Vascular Lesions - light energy is used to heat and destroy blood vessels and veins, which treat spider veins, port wine stains, leg telangiectasias, rosacea, and venous lakes.

So, what separates Candela Nordlys from other IPL machines? Well, that’s an easy answer! The Nordlys platform uses something called Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) – no other IPL machine can say the same. SWT allows dermatologists to target specific skin cells with more precision and protection.

Frax Pro System: For Shallow & Deep Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is one of the most requested skincare treatments in the world. There are two primary types – ablative (which physically harms the outer layer of the skin) and non-ablative (which treats the inner layers of the skin without damaging the outer layer). Candela Nordlys is a non-ablative procedure.

There are two unique Frax Pro applicators included on the Nordlys platform:

  • Frax 1940 - delivers 1940 nm wavelengths up to 200 µm underneath the skin’s surface. It reaches the epidermis and superficial dermis for shallow skin resurfacing.
  • Frax 1550 - delivers 1550 nm wavelengths up to 800 µm underneath the skin’s surface. It reaches the dermis (middle layer of skin) for deeper skin resurfacing.

Non-ablative laser resurfacing already boasts minimal recovery and downtime (since it doesn’t harm the outer layer), but Candela’s Frax Pro system takes it one step further with the addition of SoftCool™ – a patented feature that cools the skin for added comfort during the treatment (numbing cream is also used).

Nd:YAG 1064 nm: Reaching Deeper Layers of the Skin

The Nd:YAG 1064 nm applicator uses an Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) crystal as a laser medium. With a wavelength of 1064 nm, the laser can reach deeper layers of skin tissue and, therefore, treat benign vascular lesions, venous lakes, port wine stains, clear nail, warts, and leg veins.

Like the Frax Pro system, the Nd:YAG 1064 nm applicator is equipped with SoftCool™ technology – which releases a gentle stream of cool air to ensure the treatment area doesn’t reach high temperatures. This translates to a more relaxing and soothing procedure for the patient, while reducing the downtime.
